Romanian Camp

History

tabara_group_banner1The "Romanian Camp" project was conceived and implemented by Adina Giurgiu, supported by her entire family, the participating volunteers, and the parents of the children involved. The idea was born in 2007 and first materialized in January 2008.

The camp is a heartfelt project; working with children requires love, dedication, and a great deal of sincerity.

As far as we know, this project is unique. No other Romanian community in the diaspora has undertaken such an initiative.

We envisioned a camp for Romanian children from Auckland’s Romanian community, where Romanian would be spoken, Romanian songs would be sung, Romanian stories and legends would be told, and Romanian children’s movies would be watched in the evenings. The children would play traditional Romanian games and enjoy traditional Romanian dishes.

Parents and grandparents participated enthusiastically as volunteer instructors, each responsible for a certain number of children based on their ages.

I. Purpose and Values of the Camp

The Romanian Camp aims to provide an educational and recreational experience in a safe and inclusive environment for all participants, including children and supervising volunteers. We strive to promote and encourage the following values:

- **Romanian Culture**: We are committed to promoting and honoring Romanian culture, history, traditions, and values in an authentic and respectful manner, harmoniously integrated with New Zealand culture.
- **Inclusion**: We are dedicated to promoting diversity and inclusion. All participants are welcome regardless of ethnicity, religion, gender, or abilities, as long as they have a family member of Romanian origin.
- **Learning and Personal Development**: The camp offers opportunities for learning and personal growth through activities, workshops, and social interactions.

II. Personal and Group Safety

- **Participant Safety**: The physical, emotional, and psychological safety of all participants, including children and volunteers, is our top priority. We are committed to providing a secure environment by continuously monitoring activities and ensuring proper supervision.
- **Volunteer Screening Process**: All volunteers will undergo a screening and selection process, including background checks and reference verification. We reserve the right to exclude a volunteer from the camp if the screening process reveals concerning information.
- **Personal Safety**: Any form of inappropriate behavior, including verbal, physical, psychological, or sexual violence, is strictly prohibited. Insulting or offensive language in any language is not allowed. Volunteers are not permitted to be alone with a single child under any circumstances. Similarly, no child is allowed to enter a volunteer’s room, nor a volunteer a child’s room, unless two volunteers are present. Exceptions apply only to family members (e.g., parent-child situations). Any inappropriate behavior by a volunteer or child must be immediately reported to the camp director.

III. Behavior

- **Respect**: All volunteers and children must respect one another and all participants, regardless of differences. Derogatory or discriminatory behavior or speech is not tolerated.
- **Responsibility**: Volunteers are responsible for their actions and for ensuring the smooth operation of the camp. By participating, everyone agrees to follow the camp rules and schedule.

IV. Rules and Conduct Norms

- **Quiet Hours**: During designated quiet hours, all participants must remain silent in specified areas to allow others to rest.
- **Prohibition of Restricted Substances**: The consumption of alcohol, drugs, or other prohibited substances is strictly forbidden during the camp. Smoking or vaping is discouraged and permitted only in approved areas, away from children.
- **Adherence to the Schedule**: Volunteers and children must follow the schedule and attend activities on time. Supervisors are responsible for ensuring the children in their group adhere to the program.

V. Communication

- **Feedback and Suggestions**: Volunteers are encouraged to provide feedback and suggestions to improve the camp.
- **Reporting Incidents**: Any incident or issue must be reported immediately to the camp director.

VI. Sanctions

Violating camp rules may result in sanctions, including warnings, temporary suspension, or permanent exclusion from the camp, depending on the severity of the violation, for both children and volunteers.

**Camp Vision:**
Throughout the camp, it is essential to maintain a pleasant and friendly atmosphere where children and adults feel welcome and treated with respect and kindness. Communication should always be warm and friendly. All children have the right to feel good and have unique talents and strengths. This vision should guide everyone throughout the camp experience.

The camp's purpose (described in detail in the Camp Code of Conduct / Camp Policy) is to foster children's socialization by exposing them to Romanian culture—language, values, music, food, etc.—and to develop personal skills such as collaboration, empathy, effective communication, problem-solving, and initiative through various activities.

Camp volunteers are responsible for supervising children and ensuring the camp's success with all its activities. Even though the effort is immense, sometimes exceeding 14-hour days, camps create unforgettable memories.

Before and during the camp, the camp director will clearly outline volunteers' responsibilities, expectations, and how to respond in specific situations to comply with camp rules and health and safety standards. The camp director and activity coordinators will ensure that first-time volunteers receive guidance and assistance from more experienced volunteers whenever possible.

**Responsibilities of the Activity Coordinator:**
- Design a program suited to participants' ages, resources, weather, and capabilities while aligning with children’s interests.
- Post the schedule and list of items children need to prepare in advance.
- Coordinate with the camp director and local companies organizing activities inside or outside the camp.
- Manage the Camp Cup competition, including organizing children into teams, planning activities, tracking scores, and deciding the winning team. Communicate the results to the camp director, who will present the Camp Cup to the team captain.
- Ensure their group of children is supervised by someone else while preparing programs and activities.

**Responsibilities of the Volunteer Supervisor in the Camp:**
- Read and adhere to the Camp Code of Conduct / Camp Policy.
- Represent the Doina Association and ensure all camp rules are followed.
- Assist the camp director and activity coordinators in ensuring the smooth operation of the camp.
- Actively participate in organizing activities and supervising children during them.
- Attend the evening volunteer meeting to receive instructions for the following day (activities, roster, responsibilities, updates on children’s health, and debriefing).
- Ensure children read the regularly updated activity information and roster on the notice board.
- Avoid using derogatory language with children or other volunteers.
- Encourage children to participate in all activities, recognize their strengths, and remain positive, using simple instructions and praising even small efforts.
- Treat all children fairly, without favoritism.
- Inspect children’s luggage at the start of camp to ensure there are no inappropriate items (e.g., food, electronics, knives, medication—see children’s instructions).
- Ensure children wake up on time, wash, dress, make their beds, eat, prepare for activities, and pack appropriately.
- At bedtime, ensure children shower and sleep at an age-appropriate hour, confirming all children are in their rooms when the lights go out.
- Be responsible for children’s hygiene and room cleanliness.
- Safeguard room keys and children’s belongings.
- Oversee children’s health: ensure sunscreen or insect repellent is applied, medication (if any) is taken, and activities are suitable for their age and abilities.
- Report any incident or accident to the camp director and note if first aid supplies were used.
- Be prepared to stay back, accompany a child to the hospital, or miss activities to supervise a child needing special care or assistance.
- Rotate responsibilities, including kitchen help, cleaning, and supervising children in specific camp areas (playground, football field, etc.).
- Ensure their group of children is supervised by someone else if they are busy (e.g., helping in the kitchen or preparing activities).
- Refrain from smoking, consuming alcohol, or using prohibited substances in front of children or while driving camp vans.
- Prioritize the safety of children and volunteers in all situations not explicitly mentioned above.
